Hong Kong Singer-Songwriter Khalil Fong Passes Away at 41 After Battling Illness
Renowned Hong Kong singer-songwriter Khalil Fong has passed away at the age of 41 after a long battle with illness, his record label, Fu Music, confirmed on Saturday.
According to the label, Fong “departed peacefully” on the morning of February 21 after showing immense strength and resilience throughout his five-year health struggle.
Just days before his passing, on February 13, Fong shared a heartfelt Instagram post, extending Lunar New Year wishes to his fans while promoting his latest song, Oasis. The track is part of The Dreamer, a 10-track album he released last year, which he described as a deeply personal project recorded during different stages of his illness.
Born in 1983 in Hawaii, Fong grew up in a multicultural environment, heavily influenced by Chinese traditions and a diverse range of musical styles, including soul, jazz, and funk. His family later moved to Guangdong and Shanghai before settling in Hong Kong in the late 1990s.
Fong made a name for himself in the Chinese music industry with his 2005 debut album Soulboy, which featured the hit song Spring Breeze. His unique blend of R&B and soul music drew comparisons to artists like David Tao and Jay Chou. Over the years, he earned numerous music awards and became one of Hong Kong’s most celebrated singer-songwriters.
Some of his most popular songs include Love Love Love (2006) and Singalongsong (2008). He also collaborated with major artists such as Taiwanese pop icon A-mei and Cantopop star Eason Chan, further cementing his legacy in the industry.
Fong’s bilingual music, primarily in Mandarin and English, garnered a loyal fanbase across Asia. In 2006, he was recognized as one of Hong Kong’s “Four Little Powers of Singer-Songwriters,” alongside Hins Cheung, Ivana Wong, and Louis Cheung.
After launching his own record label, Fu Music, in 2016 and releasing his ninth album JTW, Fong gradually stepped away from the spotlight, only releasing occasional singles between 2018 and 2022. His return to music came in October 2024 with The Dreamer, an introspective album that reflected his personal journey with illness.
Beyond his musical career, Fong was known for his advocacy of vegetarianism and his deep faith as a follower of the Baha’i religion. Despite his health challenges, he remained passionate about reconnecting with his fans through music.
Following his passing, tributes poured in from fans and fellow artists who remembered him as a gifted musician and an inspiration. His manager described him as “the kindest, most talented, and most dedicated dreamer.” Singer Louis Cheung shared an emotional message, vowing to give Fong “a big hug” when they meet again.
Fong’s legacy lives on through his music, which continues to touch hearts and inspire new generations of listeners.
