Texas A&M achieved a historic 83-72 triumph over the top-ranked Auburn Tigers on Tuesday night, securing their first-ever victory against a No. 1 team in the AP Top 25 poll.
Auburn, which had maintained the nation’s top ranking for eight straight weeks, saw their six-game winning streak come to an end in College Station.
Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl credited Texas A&M’s physical play, stating, “They simply overpowered us. We have no excuses. They outmuscled us, and if we want to keep winning, we need to be prepared for teams like this.”
The Aggies demonstrated their signature toughness, dominating the offensive rebounds with a 24-9 advantage over Auburn. Andersson Garcia was instrumental in this effort, securing five offensive boards to help sustain Texas A&M’s aggressive approach.
Auburn (25-5, 14-3 SEC) faced challenges without key defender Denver Jones, who was sidelined due to an ankle injury. Additionally, leading scorer Johni Broome, averaging 18.4 points per game, was held to just eight points while managing a shoulder injury.
For Texas A&M (18-12, 9-9 SEC), Wade Taylor IV led the scoring with 16 points, and the team’s energy was amplified by the emotional significance of Senior Night at Reed Arena.
“The players on the court have been here since the beginning,” Taylor remarked. “To secure this win on Senior Night, in our final game on this court, meant everything to us.”
Auburn, having already secured the SEC regular-season title with a victory over Kentucky, will aim to bounce back in their final regular-season game. Meanwhile, Texas A&M looks to carry this momentum into the postseason.
