Sydney Thunder secured a thrilling four-wicket victory over Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League, chasing down 178 runs with a last-ball boundary from Sherfane Rutherford. The match was marred by a concerning collision between Cameron Bancroft and Daniel Sams, which halted play for 20 minutes. Both players were concussed and taken to the hospital but remained conscious.
Thunder needed 15 runs off the final over, and Rutherford delivered, hitting three boundaries off veteran Andrew Tye, including a thick inside edge for the winning runs. Rutherford finished unbeaten on 39 from 19 balls, with debutant Hugh Weibgen also contributing.
Perth’s innings had been sparked by Finn Allen, who scored a half-century for the second match in a row. The Scorchers were unable to capitalize on their strong start after the break in play, and Thunder’s chase was carried by a solid innings from David Warner, who made 49 from 33 balls before being dismissed. Weibgenβs six in the penultimate over gave Thunder hope, and Rutherford ensured the win in the final moments. The match was played in front of a crowd of 46,471, a record home attendance for Scorchers during the regular season.
