Gautam Gambhir Discusses Rohit and Kohli’s Test Cricket Future

After India’s 3-1 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has stated that the decision regarding the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in Test cricket rests with the players themselves.

In a post-series press conference, Gambhir highlighted that both players, with their vast experience, are capable of making choices that are best for the team’s future.

“They are seasoned players with an unwavering passion for the game,” said Gambhir. “They will determine what is best for the Indian team moving forward.”

The series posed a tough challenge for India’s senior players. Kohli, who has been grappling with inconsistency, managed a century in Perth but struggled in the other innings, falling to deliveries outside the off-stump in eight of his other at-bats. Rohit fared even worse, managing only 31 runs across five innings before stepping down from the final Test in Sydney, citing his poor form and its potential effect on the team.

Under the leadership of Gambhir and Rohit, India has struggled, winning only three of their last ten Test matches. This includes a home series loss to New Zealand and an away defeat to Australia, raising doubts about the team’s ability to regroup ahead of the ICC World Test Championship.

India’s next Test series is scheduled for June 2025 when they tour England for five matches, giving the team a five-month window to reevaluate and plan its long-term red-ball strategy. Gambhir emphasized the need to focus on the future but refrained from making any hasty decisions.

“A lot can change in five months—form, attitude, and strategy. Whatever happens, it will be in the best interest of Indian cricket,” he said.

Gambhir also suggested that younger players waiting for their opportunity might soon get a chance. However, he stressed the importance of maintaining fairness and unity in team selection, regardless of seniority.

“It is my responsibility to be impartial to everyone in the dressing room, whether it’s a newcomer or someone with 100 matches. This is the only way to uphold trust and integrity,” Gambhir added.

For players not participating in upcoming limited-overs series, Gambhir encouraged involvement in the Ranji Trophy to demonstrate their dedication to Test cricket. The domestic competition will resume on January 23 after a short break.

“If you neglect domestic cricket, you will never produce the players needed for Test cricket,” Gambhir emphasized. “All players available and committed to red-ball cricket should take part.”

India will now shift focus to the T20I and ODI series against England in January-February, followed by their participation in the Champions Trophy in the UAE.

Meanwhile, Australia’s dominant performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy secured their spot in the ICC World Test Championship final at Lord’s in June 2025, where they will face South Africa, who clinched their place with a dramatic two-wicket victory over Pakistan in the Boxing Day Test.
