Will Smith Fuels ‘Matrix’ Speculation with Cryptic Post, Insiders Deny His Involvement

Will Smith sparked online speculation about a potential role in a new Matrix film after posting a mysterious Instagram message that seemed to reference the legendary sci-fi series. The post, styled in the iconic Matrix font, reflected on Smith’s decision to decline the role of Neo back in 1997. “In 1997, the Wachowskis offered Will Smith the role of Neo in The Matrix. Smith turned it down, choosing Wild Wild West instead, thinking it was a better fit at the time. But the question remains: What would The Matrix have been like with Will Smith as Neo? Wake up, Will… The Matrix has you…”

The cryptic message led fans to speculate that Smith might make an appearance in the upcoming Matrix installment. However, insiders at Warner Bros. quickly clarified to The Hollywood Reporter that the actor is not part of the project.

This new Matrix film will be the first in the franchise without the Wachowski siblings directing, though Lana Wachowski will serve as an executive producer. The original Matrix, which revolutionized the sci-fi genre and grossed $467 million globally, remains one of the most influential films of its time.

Smith’s decision to pass on playing Neo in favor of starring in Wild Wild West is frequently discussed as one of Hollywood’s biggest “what if” scenarios. While The Matrix became a groundbreaking cultural phenomenon, Wild Wild West failed to replicate its success.
