Karla Sofia Gascon Confirms SAG Awards Absence Amid Controversy

Spanish actress Karla Sofia Gascon, known for her role in Emilia Perez, has decided to forgo attending the upcoming Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards. The 52-year-old, who is nominated for Best Female Actor in a Leading Role, will not be present at the ceremony scheduled for Sunday, February 23rd.

According to Page Six, a source close to Gascon revealed that she opted to skip the event following backlash over resurfaced tweets containing racist and anti-Muslim sentiments.

Despite her absence from the SAG Awards, Gascon is expected to travel to Los Angeles for the Academy Awards on March 2nd, where she is also in contention for the Best Actress award.

Her decision to miss the SAGs follows a pattern, as she previously skipped several major award ceremonies, including the Critics Choice Awards, Producers Guild of America (PGA) Awards, Goya Awards, and the BAFTAs in London, where she was also nominated.

Instead of attending these events, Gascon was recently spotted in Milan, Italy, spending time with close friends, including Italian director Stefania Rossella Grassi and producer Melina Arena.

Grassi, who collaborated with Gascon on the 2019 short film Preludio, spoke about their bond, telling the outlet: “I have known Karla for many years. She is both strong and vulnerable, with immense talent and a generous heart. During my difficult times, she never abandoned me.”

The director expressed her support for Gascon, emphasizing that she was surrounded by loved ones in Italy. “Karla was happy to be with us, among people who truly care for her. I believe that meritocratic America will recognize her talent on Oscar night—she deserves the backing of those who know her heart and have worked with her.”
