WASHINGTON:US officials are currently examining the national security implications of the Chinese artificial intelligence application DeepSeek, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who spoke on Tuesday.
The National Security Council is conducting a review to assess the potential risks associated with the app, Leavitt confirmed. She described the situation as a “wake-up call” for the American AI industry and emphasized the White House’s commitment to maintaining the dominance of US AI technology.
While Leavitt did not specify if any actions would be taken following the review, President Donald Trump addressed the issue on Monday, suggesting that the release of DeepSeek should serve as motivation for American companies. He noted that Chinese companies have introduced a more affordable and faster method of artificial intelligence development.
“The launch of DeepSeek should remind our industries that we need to focus on competing to win,” Trump said, highlighting the need for the US to stay ahead in AI technology.
Trump also recalled conversations with Chinese leaders who praised the brilliance of American scientists. He indicated that if Chinese companies could develop cheaper AI technology, US companies would inevitably follow suit.
“We always lead with ideas. We’re first. So, this could be a positive development,” Trump added. “Instead of spending billions, you can spend less and hopefully achieve the same results.”
