White Helmets Start Probe into Mass Grave Unearthed in Damascus

The Syrian Civil Defense, commonly known as the White Helmets, has launched an investigation into a newly discovered mass grave near the Baghdad Bridge area in Damascus, which was uncovered on Tuesday.

According to Anadolu, the grave contains numerous trenches filled with human remains, along with sacks labeled with prison codes, suggesting that the individuals may have been victims of torture or may have died in infamous detention centers such as Sednaya prison.

In response to the discovery, White Helmets teams quickly secured the site and began retrieving the bodies, which are believed to be the remains of people who suffered under the Assad regime’s brutal methods.

This mass grave is part of Syria’s ongoing efforts to uncover and recover remains following the downfall of the Baath Party regime on December 8.

Ammar Selmo, a member of the Syrian Civil Defense’s Executive Board, spoke to Anadolu, confirming that the team was mobilized after reports of human remains were received. “This site is profoundly disturbing and horrifying,” Selmo remarked. “It shows the sad reality of Syria—it’s become a place for organized mass graves. The bodies were buried without respect, discarded in flour sacks.”
