71 Dead in Wedding Caravan Crash in Southern Ethiopia

A tragic accident in southern Ethiopia’s Sidama region has left 71 people dead, including a bridegroom, after a wedding caravan crashed on Sunday night. The group, which was traveling to the bride’s home, was riding in a truck when it veered off the road and plunged into a river near Bona Zuria, Gelan Bridge, due to the steep and winding road conditions.

According to the Regional Police Commission, 68 men and 3 women were killed in the crash, while two others sustained severe injuries. Several of the injured remain in critical condition and are receiving treatment at Bona General Hospital.

Officials noted that it is common for people in the region to travel on the backs of trucks, and the combination of this practice with the road’s sharp curves and steep slopes contributed to the tragic accident.
