FBI Arrests Indian National Harpreet Singh in Sacramento Over Terror Allegations
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested Harpreet Singh, an Indian citizen, in Sacramento, California, on Thursday. Singh is wanted in India for his alleged involvement in a grenade attack that took place in Chandigarh in 2023.
Authorities claim Singh is linked to Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), a banned Sikh separatist group. Indian officials accuse him of playing a key role in providing financial, logistical, and arms-related support to the group’s operatives within India.
The FBI confirmed that Singh, who had entered the United States unlawfully, was using encrypted communication apps and disposable phones to avoid detection. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), FBI Sacramento said Singh is believed to be behind terror attacks in Punjab and is associated with two international extremist organizations.
India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) had previously offered a cash reward for any information leading to Singh’s arrest. According to the NIA, Singh coordinated a grenade attack on a retired police officer in Chandigarh while operating from outside India.
This arrest is part of a broader effort by both the United States and India to counter global terrorist networks. In recent years, India has pursued the extradition of multiple suspects believed to have extremist ties and currently residing in the U.S., including Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who was named in an alleged assassination plot that prompted legal action in New York.
Singh remains in U.S. federal custody as authorities work with Indian officials to determine the next course of action.
