Val Kilmer, ‘Top Gun’ Star and Tom Cruise’s Co-Star, Dies at 65

Val Kilmer, the acclaimed actor known for his roles in Top Gun and Batman Forever, has passed away at the age of 65.

His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed to The New York Times that he died from pneumonia on April 1.

Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 but later recovered. His final on-screen appearance was in the 2023 sequel Top Gun: Maverick, where he shared an emotional moment with Tom Cruise.

Reflecting on their reunion, Cruise told Jimmy Kimmel in 2023, “It was incredibly emotional. I’ve known Val for decades, and seeing him embody that character again was powerful.”

Speculation about Kilmer’s health circulated for years, but he publicly addressed his battle with throat cancer in a 2017 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. His health struggles first drew attention in 2015 when he was hospitalized for a suspected tumor, though he later denied the claim, calling it a “complication.”
