US Schools Close, Adjust Schedules Due to Freezing Weather

Schools across the United States are modifying schedules due to severe winter weather, including freezing temperatures, snowstorms, and icy roads, creating hazardous conditions for travel and safety. From New Jersey to Colorado and North Carolina, districts are prioritizing student and commuter safety.

In Manchester Township, New Jersey, schools delayed openings by 90 minutes on Tuesday, Jan. 7, citing icy roads caused by freezing temperatures and prior melt-off. Morning programs, including the A.M. Y Kids program, were canceled. Updated schedules are available on the district’s website.

In Colorado, heavy overnight snow along the Front Range resulted in widespread closures and delays. The 9NEWS Weather Impact Team declared a “Weather Impact Day” for Tuesday, warning of slick roads during morning commutes. Cherry Creek Schools, Douglas County School District, and Academy District 20 delayed openings, while Colorado Springs District 11 and Pueblo School District 60 closed entirely. Colleges, including the University of Denver and the Air Force Academy, also announced delays. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect, with snow accumulations of 4-10 inches predicted in some areas.

In North Carolina, icy roads led to delayed start times in the Triangle area. Franklin County Schools and Crossroads Christian School delayed openings by two hours, while Granville County Schools implemented a three-hour delay. Officials are monitoring conditions as more winter weather is forecast later in the week.

Amid these weather challenges, officials urge residents to stay updated on closures and travel advisories.
