US Envoy Plans Talks in Saudi Arabia on Ukraine-Russia Ceasefire and Peace Framework
US envoy Steve Witkoff announced on Thursday that he intends to visit Saudi Arabia for discussions with Ukrainian representatives regarding a potential ceasefire with Russia and the establishment of a broader peace framework.
“We are currently working on arranging a meeting with the Ukrainians in Riyadh or possibly in Jeddah,” Witkoff informed reporters. “The objective is to outline a framework for a peace agreement and establish an initial ceasefire,” he added.
According to Witkoff, US President Donald Trump responded positively to a letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following a tense exchange at the White House last Friday.
“President Trump viewed Zelensky’s letter as a constructive step forward. It included an apology, a recognition of the significant support provided by the United States to Ukraine, and an expression of gratitude,” Witkoff stated.
During the meeting, Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticized Zelensky for not adequately acknowledging the extensive military aid the US has supplied since Russia’s 2022 invasion.
Zelensky departed without agreeing to a proposed deal from Trump, which would have required Ukraine to transfer a substantial portion of its mineral resources to the US.
When asked whether Ukraine would sign the agreement during the upcoming talks in Saudi Arabia, Witkoff remarked, “Zelensky has indicated a willingness to sign, and we will see if he follows through.”
