United pilot forgets passport, forcing LAX-Shanghai flight turnaround; passengers get $15 coupon

United Airlines Flight Forced to U-Turn After Pilot Forgets Passport

A United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai made an embarrassing mid-air turnaround when one of its pilots realized they had forgotten their passport—a critical oversight that left 257 passengers stranded for hours. The incident, which occurred on March 22, 2025, has sparked criticism over the airline’s handling of the situation and its minimal compensation for affected travelers.

Flight UA198, operated by a Boeing 787-9, departed Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at 2:00 PM but abruptly reversed course two hours into the journey. The plane landed in San Francisco around 5:00 PM after the crew realized one of the four pilots lacked the necessary documentation to enter China.

Passengers expressed frustration on social media, with one X (formerly Twitter) user writing, *”UA198 diverted to SFO because the pilot forgot his passport? Now stuck for over six hours. Completely unacceptable. United, what compensation are you offering for this total mishandling?”* Another traveler quipped, *”$15 at an airport? That gets you a bottle of water and half a granola bar!”*—referring to the meal vouchers distributed by the airline.

After arranging a replacement crew, the flight finally departed San Francisco at 8:28 PM, arriving in Shanghai at 12:48 AM on March 24—more than six hours behind schedule. United Airlines confirmed the incident in a statement, acknowledging the passport oversight and noting that passengers were provided with meal vouchers and compensation.

This isn’t the first time United has faced such a blunder. Just a week earlier, another pilot forgot their passport before a Shanghai-bound flight, raising questions about the airline’s pre-flight verification processes. Aviation enthusiasts on Reddit suggested adding passport checks to pilot pre-departure protocols, with one user remarking, *”They have checklists for everything—fuel, maintenance, safety. Maybe add ‘Do you have your passport?’ to the list!”*

While EU regulations would have entitled passengers to up to $650 for a preventable delay of this magnitude, U.S. travelers were left with nominal vouchers and mounting irritation. The incident serves as a stark reminder that even routine flights can be derailed by human error—leaving passengers to foot the bill in time and frustration.
