UN Cautions Syria Against Retaliatory Attacks

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations envoy for Syria on Wednesday urged the country’s new leadership to prevent a cycle of retaliation and vengeance following the removal of Bashar al-Assad from power.

During a Security Council session, Geir Pedersen expressed concern over reports of ongoing violence, including fatalities in clashes and allegations of severe mistreatment in detention under Syria’s transitional administration.

Pedersen also highlighted reports of kidnappings, looting, property seizures, and forced evictions of families from public housing, raising alarms over the deteriorating humanitarian situation.

Assad was ousted in December by rebel forces led by the Islamist faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, with its leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, now serving as the country’s interim president.
