UN Calls on India and Pakistan to Show Maximum Restraint

UN Secretary-General Urges India and Pakistan to Exercise Restraint Amid Kashmir Attack Fallout

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on India and Pakistan to show maximum restraint following a deadly attack in Indian-Occupied Kashmir earlier this week. He urged both nations to avoid escalating tensions further.

“The Secretary-General is monitoring the situation closely and with deep concern,” said his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, during a press briefing at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The attack, which took place near Pahalgam—a popular tourist spot in Indian-Occupied Kashmir—resulted in approximately 26 fatalities. Guterres condemned the violence and expressed his condolences to the victims and their families.

Following the incident, tensions between India and Pakistan have soared. India took several retaliatory steps, including suspending the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, closing cross-border trade routes, expelling Pakistani diplomats, and sending some Pakistani visa holders out of the country.

Pakistan, which denied any involvement in the attack, responded by halting visa issuance under a bilateral exemption scheme, expelling Indian diplomats, and closing its airspace to Indian flights.

Dujarric mentioned that Guterres had not reached out directly to the leaders of either country but emphasized the importance of resolving the crisis through peaceful dialogue. He also warned that actions like India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty could further aggravate the already tense situation.
