UMass Lowell Student Dies After Falling from Richard P. Howe Bridge

A heartbreaking event unfolded at the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Friday, January 24, when a student tragically took their own life by jumping from the Richard P. Howe Bridge.

The incident took place around 10:40 a.m., prompting a swift response from authorities who received a report about an individual in the Merrimack River near the bridge. Emergency responders, including crews from the Lowell Fire Department, Lowell Police, and UMass Lowell Police, arrived at the scene but were unable to save the person.

The university confirmed that the individual was a freshman student from Lowell studying computer science. Several onlookers, including members of the UMass Lowell community, witnessed the tragic event while crossing the bridge that connects North Campus, East Campus, and University Crossing.
