UK Police Launch Investigation After Muslim Graves Vandalized in Watford Cemetery

Authorities in the United Kingdom have launched a formal investigation into what is being treated as a suspected Islamophobic hate crime after 85 Muslim graves — many of them belonging to infants and young children — were vandalized at Carpenders Park Lawn Cemetery in Watford.

According to Hertfordshire Police, the damage was first discovered by a mourning family visiting the site, sparking widespread distress and outrage within the local Muslim community.

In response, law enforcement has increased patrols in the surrounding area and is urging any witnesses or individuals with relevant information to come forward.

Inspector Will Rogers-Overy stated that senior officers are coordinating closely with community leaders to offer support to those affected.

“In the coming days, we will continue to engage with members of the Muslim community, who have understandably been deeply hurt by this horrific act,” he said.

Wadi Funeralcare, which regularly supports Muslim families in the region, condemned the attack, describing the damage as “heart-wrenching” and referring to the vandalism as acts of “unimaginable disrespect.”

Although the cemetery lies within Watford, it is owned and managed by Brent Council. Council leader Muhammed Butt denounced the act as a probable instance of Islamophobic hatred.

“It seems the Muslim section was deliberately targeted, suggesting a hate-driven motive behind this crime,” he said. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the affected families. As soon as the police have completed their investigation, we will repair the damaged plaques and restore the area to a place of dignity and remembrance.”

Abbas Merali, a Conservative councillor from Three Rivers District Council, called the act “barbaric” and said it had inflicted significant emotional pain on grieving families and the wider community.
