UK Implements Electronic Travel Authorisation for European Visitors

UK Expands Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to European Nationals

Starting April 2, European travelers must secure an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before visiting the UK, as the government broadens the system initially introduced in 2023.

Purpose of ETA Expansion

The ETA scheme aims to enhance border security and simplify entry procedures for visa-exempt travelers. While not a visa, the ETA is digitally linked to the applicant’s passport and grants permission to travel to the UK. However, entry remains subject to border control approval.

Who Needs an ETA?

European nationals who previously traveled to the UK without a visa must now obtain an ETA, joining travelers from countries like the US, Canada, and Australia, who were already required to do so. This rule applies to all visitors who do not hold UK immigration status and are entering for short stays.

Who is Exempt?

The following individuals do not need an ETA:

  • Holders of valid UK visas
  • Those with permission to live, work, or study in the UK (including settled or pre-settled status)
  • Travelers transiting through a UK airport without passing border control
  • British or Irish citizens
  • Holders of British Overseas Territories passports
  • Travelers from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man
  • Children on France-UK school trips
  • Individuals exempt from UK immigration control

British and Irish dual citizens can travel with their respective passports without requiring an ETA.

Cost and Application Process

Currently, the ETA application fee is £10, but this will rise to £16 from April 9. Travelers can apply via the UK ETA mobile app or the official government website. While many applications are approved within minutes, authorities recommend applying at least three days in advance in case additional review is needed.

Applicants must submit passport details, contact information, a recent photograph, and responses to a brief questionnaire. The passport used for the application must match the one used for travel.

Rejected Applications

If an ETA application is denied, the applicant will receive a reason for refusal but cannot appeal the decision. Those who are rejected must apply for a visa if they still intend to travel to the UK.

ETA for Transit Passengers

Travelers transiting through the UK without passing border control do not require an ETA. However, passengers should confirm their requirements with their airline before travel.

Validity and Security Measures

An ETA is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and allows multiple visits of up to six months per stay.

The UK Home Office states that the ETA system enhances border security by collecting biometric and biographic data, along with suitability and criminal history information. This helps authorities pre-screen travelers and prevent potential security risks from entering the UK.

Impact on Pakistani Travelers

Pakistani passport holders are not included in the ETA scheme, as they already require a visa to enter the UK. However, those with dual nationality, including British or Irish passports, are exempt.

The extension of ETA requirements may affect Pakistani-origin travelers living in Europe, particularly those with business or family connections in the UK. This policy shift aligns with broader global trends toward stricter travel security measures.
