LONDON:
A British woman, now in her 30s, is still haunted by the trauma of being groomed and sexually assaulted by a criminal gang when she was a teenager. She is one of many victims in the UK’s “grooming gangs” scandal, which involved organized groups exploiting vulnerable girls in multiple towns and cities over several decades.
Despite the passage of time, the scandal has resurfaced in the media, forcing the survivor to confront her painful memories. This renewed attention gives her hope that it might push the government to take action. Calls for a new public inquiry have grown, spurred by opposition politicians and social media posts from Elon Musk, who criticized Prime Minister Keir Starmer for his failure to address the issue when he served as chief prosecutor.
Local investigations have been carried out, and a national inquiry into child sexual abuse made several recommendations in 2022, but many have yet to be implemented. “It just kind of brought everything back up for me,” the survivor shared, reflecting on how the renewed media attention has made her feel like the victims are still forgotten. Nine men were convicted for her abuse.
Her lawyer, Jonathan Bridge, who represents other victims, emphasized that many survivors donβt want a new inquiry but rather want the government to act on the existing recommendations, such as providing better support for victims and improving crime detection.
In response to the pressure, the government has committed to introducing new laws that would require professionals working with children to report suspected abuse, one of the national inquiry’s key demands.
The survivor, who was living in a care home when the abuse took place, recounted her ordeal, including being drugged and held captive for four days, where multiple men came into the room. The perpetrators were identified as mostly Pakistani men, although a 2014 report found that local officials avoided identifying ethnic backgrounds for fear of being labeled racist.
While the government and Starmer’s office have defended their actions, focusing on specific communities as perpetrators has stirred controversy. Critics argue that what matters most is action for the victims. The survivor’s plea is simple: she wants a chance to live a normal life, free from fear and trauma.
