Knife Attack in German Park Leaves Two Dead, Afghan Suspect Arrested
In a tragic incident on Wednesday, a knife attacker took the lives of a two-year-old child and a man in a public park in Aschaffenburg, Germany. The police have arrested an Afghan national, who is the primary suspect in the attack.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his outrage over the “horrific act of violence,” which also left three others injured. He questioned how the assailant, a failed asylum seeker, was allowed to remain in Germany.
The stabbing, which adds to a series of similar attacks in the country, has reignited discussions about immigration policies, especially with Germany’s general election approaching on February 23.
According to Bavaria’s regional interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, the adult victim, a 41-year-old passerby, was killed while attempting to protect children from the assailant, who was wielding a kitchen knife. A two-year-old child of Moroccan descent also lost their life in the attack.
