Two Israeli soldiers were killed and eight others wounded when a gunman opened fire on troops in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, triggering a gunfight in which the shooter was killed by Israeli forces, according to the military.
Two of the injured soldiers are in serious condition, while the remaining six sustained minor injuries.
The incident occurred at a checkpoint near Tayasir in the Jordan Valley, amidst heightened tensions in the West Bank due to ongoing Israeli operations in Jenin and Tulkarm, as well as smaller raids in other areas.
Israeli media outlet Ynet reported that the attacker, armed with an M-16 rifle, shot at a soldier emerging from a fortified bunker, leading to a gunbattle that lasted several minutes.
This attack is part of a broader surge in violence across the West Bank since the beginning of the Gaza conflict in 2023. Israeli forces have carried out frequent sweeps, arresting thousands of Palestinians and killing hundreds, including fighters and civilians. At the same time, dozens of Israelis have been killed in attacks by Palestinians in both the West Bank and Israel.
