Trump Urges Iran to Abandon Nuclear Plans or Face Military Action
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Iran, stating that the country must quickly abandon any aspirations of developing nuclear weapons or face a military response, as diplomatic talks between the two nations continue, according to Reuters.
Trump’s comments came after a meeting between U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and a senior Iranian official in Oman on Saturday. Both parties characterized the meeting as “constructive,” and they are planning a follow-up session, possibly in Rome, later this week.
Despite the optimistic tone from the discussions, Trump expressed doubts about Iran’s intentions. “I think they’re just stringing us along,” he remarked, emphasizing that Iran must completely give up its nuclear weapons ambitions. “Iran cannot possess a nuclear weapon,” he added.
When asked if military action is still a possibility, Trump responded firmly, “Of course it is,” reiterating the seriousness of the U.S. stance.
Sources familiar with the talks indicated that the current negotiations are preliminary, designed to assess the possibility of a broader agreement. However, Trump warned that time is running out. “They’re very close” to developing a nuclear weapon, he said, urging for swift action to avoid a “severe response.”
While the Biden administration has engaged in indirect talks with Iran, progress has been limited. The last direct talks occurred during the Obama administration, which brokered the 2015 nuclear deal that Trump later withdrew from.
With rising tensions, the outcome of the upcoming talks will be crucial in shaping the future of U.S.-Iran relations.
