Trump Hints at Xi Jinping’s Upcoming US Visit Amid Trade Tensions

President Donald Trump revealed on Monday that Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit the United States soon, as trade tensions between the two economic powerhouses continue to escalate, according to AFP.

While addressing an audience at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, Trump stated, “He’ll be coming in the not-too-distant future,” but did not provide additional details regarding the visit.

Reports from The Wall Street Journal indicate that discussions are underway between Washington and Beijing to arrange a possible summit in June, aligning with both leaders’ birthdays.

Since resuming office in January, Trump has implemented tariffs on key trade partners—including China, Canada, and Mexico—citing concerns over trade imbalances and the ongoing fentanyl crisis.

Earlier this month, the US administration increased tariffs on Chinese imports from 10% to 20%, prompting Beijing to respond with retaliatory measures, including tariffs of up to 15% on American agricultural exports such as soybeans, pork, and chicken.

In addition, China, the world’s largest steel producer, has vowed to take “all necessary measures” in response to separate US-imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Beijing has since urged negotiations to ease tensions, emphasizing the need for dialogue.

Xi’s last visit to the US took place in November 2023, when he met with then-President Joe Biden in California in an effort to de-escalate diplomatic and economic disputes.

With fresh trade conflicts emerging, Xi’s upcoming visit is expected to play a significant role in shaping the future of US-China relations.
