NEW ORLEANS, US:A devastating incident occurred in New Orleans on New Year’s Day when a man deliberately drove a pickup truck into a crowd of revelers, resulting in at least 10 fatalities and over 35 injuries.
The FBI identified the attacker as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas. An Islamic State flag was reportedly discovered in the suspect’s vehicle, leading authorities to investigate potential links to terrorist organizations.
The attack unfolded around 3:15 a.m. local time in the bustling French Quarter, filled with celebrations for the New Year. According to Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick, the attacker was driving at high speed with clear intent to cause maximum harm.
The suspect was killed in a shootout with police after injuring two officers, who are now in stable condition. Explosive devices were reportedly found in his truck and nearby areas.
President Joe Biden condemned the attack and extended federal support to New Orleans, emphasizing that violence has no justification. In contrast, President-elect Donald Trump commented on the nationβs crime issues, linking the event to broader immigration concerns, though no connection was substantiated as the suspect was an American citizen.
Witnesses described scenes of chaos and tragedy. “This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could,” one witness recounted. Others attempted to assist victims at the scene, many of whom had succumbed to their injuries.
The attack has drawn comparisons to a recent incident in Germany, where a car-ramming assault claimed several lives, underscoring the growing global concern over vehicle-based attacks.
New Orleans, a major tourist destination, is scheduled to host the Sugar Bowl college football game soon. Authorities have pledged to ensure the safety of all venues and routes, with increased law enforcement already deployed for the holiday season.
