Third Round of Iran-US Nuclear Talks Concludes, Tehran Calls Talks ‘More Serious’

Iran-US Nuclear Talks in Muscat End, Tehran Describes Discussions as ‘More Serious’

The third round of indirect nuclear talks between Iran and the United States wrapped up in Muscat on Saturday, mediated by the Omani government.

Speaking after the talks, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described this round as “more serious than before,” noting that the discussions had delved into more specific nuclear-related topics. “We are now gradually transitioning from broader subjects to more detailed issues. Today, we had economic experts participating, and in the next session, I expect an expert from the Atomic Energy Organization to join,” Araghchi stated.

He also highlighted that both sides had exchanged written opinions multiple times during this round, with questions and answers being facilitated by the Omani mediators. “Further reviews will be conducted in the capitals before the next round,” he added.

Araghchi expressed cautious optimism, saying that while there is hope for progress, the Iranian side remains “extremely cautious” about the outcome. He also reiterated that the negotiations remain focused solely on nuclear issues, with Tehran rejecting any discussions on other topics. “The other side has respected our stance on this,” he said.

The lead Iranian negotiator also acknowledged that while there are some significant differences between the two sides, the overall progress has been positive, and both parties have demonstrated seriousness in their approach. The delegations will now return to their respective capitals for consultations before reconvening for another round of talks next Saturday, with the venue to be decided by Oman.

Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi commented on the talks, noting that the discussions had focused on shared aspirations to reach a mutual agreement based on respect and lasting commitments. “Core principles, objectives, and technical concerns were addressed. Talks will continue next week, with another high-level meeting tentatively scheduled for May 3rd,” he added.

The latest round of negotiations follows the previous round in Rome and included both diplomatic and technical discussions. US Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs, Steve Witkoff, led the American delegation, while Araghchi represented Iran. The first round of talks took place in Muscat on April 12.

The ongoing talks are a response to US President Donald Trump’s stance that Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons and his threats of military action if a new deal isn’t reached. The new agreement would replace the 2015 deal brokered during the Obama administration.

Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei described the atmosphere of the third round of talks as serious, with both sides exchanging views on key issues, including sanctions relief and the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program. He also denied reports suggesting that Iran’s ballistic missile program was part of the negotiations.
