Sven Botman Out for 8 Weeks with Knee Injury, Misses Carabao Cup Final

Newcastle United defender Sven Botman is expected to be out of action for approximately eight weeks after sustaining another knee injury, as confirmed by manager Eddie Howe.

The 25-year-old Dutch international had only recently returned to the pitch following a 10-month absence due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in March 2024. Unfortunately, he has now encountered a problem in his other knee, necessitating surgical intervention.

Howe explained, “We’ve been working hard to get him back to full fitness. He was almost ready for the Brighton game [on March 2], but the day before, he felt something in his knee again. This week, he experienced the same discomfort, so it appears he’ll need surgery.”

Botman has managed just five appearances this season and has already missed Newcastle’s last five matches. According to Howe, the upcoming procedure will involve “clearing out some fluid” and is expected to keep the defender out for around two months.

This latest setback compounds Newcastle’s defensive challenges as they gear up for the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool on March 16. Defender Lewis Hall has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a foot injury, while forward Anthony Gordon will be unavailable for the final after receiving a suspension.

Gordon was shown a red card during Newcastle’s FA Cup fifth-round defeat to Brighton for making contact with defender Jan Paul van Hecke’s face. The club decided against appealing the decision.

Howe commented, “There was no intent from Anthony. He didn’t mean to harm anyone. But you have to consider whether there’s any chance of success with an appeal, and if not, what’s the point? Anthony understands the situation.”

With key players sidelined, Newcastle will need to adjust their lineup as they navigate a critical phase of the season.
