Strong Earthquake Hits Nepal’s Kathmandu, No Casualties Reported
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck north of Kathmandu, Nepal, on Friday, as confirmed by the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre.
The quake’s epicenter was in Bhairab Kunda, Sindhupalchok District, near the Himalayan mountain range along the Tibet border.
According to different seismological agencies, the German Research Center for Geosciences estimated the magnitude at 5.6 with a depth of 10 kilometers, while the US Geological Survey reported it as a 5.5 magnitude quake.
No significant damage or casualties have been reported so far.
Pasang Nurpu Sherpa, chairman of the Bhote Koshi rural municipality where the epicenter is located, informed Reuters, “So far, there are no reports of damage. However, a landslide was triggered at Dugunagadi Bhir across the river, though there are no houses in the affected area.”
Sindhupalchok district governor, Kiran Thapa, added, “One inmate from the district jail sustained a broken hand while attempting to flee during the tremor and is currently receiving medical treatment. Additionally, a police post building in Kodari developed minor cracks.”
Ganesh Nepali, a senior official of Sindhupalchok district, described the experience: “The quake jolted us awake. People rushed out of their homes but have since returned. So far, no reports of injuries or major damage have been received.”
