Pakistan’s premier fast bowler, Shaheen Shah Afridi, endured the most expensive over of his One Day International (ODI) career during the opening match of the tri-nation series against New Zealand. The match took place at Lahore’s Qaddafi Stadium, marking the venue’s first international fixture since its recent renovation.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, New Zealand recovered from early setbacks to post a formidable total of 330/6 in their allotted 50 overs. Despite a steady start, it was their aggressive finish that pushed them past the 300-run mark.
At the end of the 43rd over, the visitors stood at 230/5, with Pakistan seemingly in control. However, Glenn Phillips’ explosive batting in the final phase turned the tide, propelling New Zealand to a commanding total. Pakistan’s bowlers struggled in the last five overs, conceding a record 84 runs in this phase of a home ODI.
The hosts faced further difficulties when Haris Rauf left the field due to an injury, forcing Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi to absorb the pressure. New Zealand capitalized on this, targeting Pakistan’s leading pacers. Afridi, in particular, found himself under attack, giving away 25 runs in the final over—a personal worst in ODIs. This surpassed his previous record of 24 runs conceded against Australia in Hobart.
Although Afridi managed to claim three wickets, he proved expensive, finishing with figures of 10-0-88-3. Naseem Shah also had a tough outing, failing to take a wicket while conceding 70 runs in his full quota of overs.
Phillips remained unbeaten, smashing a sensational 106 off just 74 balls, with his last 56 runs coming from a mere 19 deliveries. His late fireworks set Pakistan a daunting chase of 331 runs, leaving the hosts with a significant challenge ahead.
