Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Embarks on Landmark Visit to Pakistan

Rwanda’s Foreign Minister, Olivier Jean Patrick Nduhungirehe, arrived in Islamabad on Monday for a historic visit, marking the first official trip following the establishment of diplomatic missions in both Kigali and Islamabad. The visit, from April 21 to 22, was initiated at the invitation of Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar.

The two leaders held significant discussions aimed at exploring new opportunities for cooperation in trade, investment, defense, diplomacy, and cultural exchanges. One key outcome was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on diplomatic training cooperation.

During a joint press briefing, FM Dar expressed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its ties with Rwanda. He highlighted the recent opening of the Rwandan High Commission in Islamabad and emphasized the potential for collaboration in sectors such as ICT, digital transformation, fintech, and youth innovation platforms. He also pointed to Pakistan’s well-known exports—pharmaceuticals, textiles, surgical instruments, agri-tech, and sports goods—as areas that could greatly benefit Rwanda’s expanding economy.

On the multilateral front, both ministers recognized the strong diplomatic support their countries provide to one another at the United Nations and other international platforms. Nduhungirehe reinforced the shared commitment to global peace, noting that both nations are key contributors to UN peacekeeping missions and affirmed the mutual desire to enhance bilateral cooperation across various sectors.
