Union flags are being flown at half-mast across royal residences in honor of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88. King Charles, Prince William, and other royals observed the tradition of lowering the flags as a sign of respect, and the Guard Change ceremony today will include somber music.
King Charles expressed his sorrow in a heartfelt statement, remembering the Pope’s compassion and dedication to faith. He also recalled the recent visit he and Queen Camilla had with Pope Francis, describing it as a deeply moving experience.
Pope Francis’ body will lie in state at St. Peterβs Basilica ahead of his funeral, which is expected soon. A nine-day mourning period has been declared in Italy. The funeral will likely attract dignitaries, including members of the British Royal Family, reminiscent of Prince Charles’ presence at Pope John Paul II’s funeral in 2005.
The focus will soon shift to the papal conclave, where cardinals will gather in the Sistine Chapel to select the next pope.
