Ramadan in Saudi Arabia to Commence on March 1 Following Crescent Moon Sighting

Saudi Arabia has officially declared that Ramadan will commence on Saturday, March 1, following the confirmed sighting of the crescent moon on Friday evening.

Authorities had earlier encouraged Muslims to observe the sky on the 29th of Shaban, a significant date in the Islamic lunar calendar. Since Islamic months consist of either 29 or 30 days based on moon visibility, this observation was crucial in determining the start of Ramadan.

With the sighting verified, Muslims across Saudi Arabia and several other nations will begin fasting from dawn until sunset, a central practice during the holy month. Ramadan is also characterized by additional prayers, including the nightly Taraweeh, along with increased spiritual reflection and acts of charity.

Many believers take the opportunity to perform Umrah during Ramadan, as it is believed to carry spiritual rewards equivalent to the Hajj pilgrimage. Some devotees travel to Makkah before the holy month to participate in the first Taraweeh prayer at the Grand Mosque, while others prefer to spend the final days of Ramadan in the sacred city, either celebrating Eid there or returning home after breaking their last fast.

Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, holds deep religious significance. Fasting is not only an act of devotion but also a means to cultivate self-discipline, restraint, and compassion for those in need.
