Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani met with a Hamas delegation in Doha on Saturday to discuss a comprehensive ceasefire agreement aimed at ending the ongoing war in Gaza. The meeting, which included senior Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya, was focused on advancing negotiations to bring about a clear and lasting ceasefire.
The Prime Minister’s involvement in these talks is notable, as he typically does not play a public role in the mediation process, which has been deadlocked for months. A statement from Qatar’s Foreign Ministry highlighted the discussions on how to move forward with negotiations for a ceasefire.
Earlier in the month, Sheikh Mohammed expressed optimism, citing a sense of renewed momentum in the talks following the U.S. presidential election. He noted that the incoming Trump administration had offered significant encouragement for a potential deal.
Qatar, alongside the U.S. and Egypt, has been part of efforts to negotiate a truce and secure the release of hostages, but talks have stalled. While Qatar had paused its mediation in November, it resumed indirect negotiations in December, with both sides reporting progress before again accusing each other of obstructing the process.
