Pope Francis Remains at Risk Following Breathing Crisis Amid Pneumonia Fight

Vatican Confirms Pope Francis’ Condition Remains Serious Following Breathing Crisis

VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis, currently undergoing treatment for pneumonia, experienced a severe breathing crisis on Friday, leading to vomiting before receiving medical intervention that helped stabilize his condition, according to the Vatican.

The incident occurred just hours after reports suggested that the 88-year-old pontiff’s health was improving and was no longer considered critical. However, the latest development has raised fresh concerns.

The Vatican detailed that the pope, who has been hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for the past two weeks, suffered a sudden bronchospasm, which resulted in vomiting and significant respiratory distress. In response, he underwent immediate broncho-aspiration and was placed on non-invasive mechanical ventilation, which effectively stabilized his oxygen levels.

Throughout the episode, Pope Francis remained fully conscious and cooperative, the Vatican statement assured. Doctors are closely monitoring him over the next 24 to 48 hours to assess whether this complication has worsened his overall condition.

Despite the crisis, a Vatican source indicated that the pope, though still in danger, remains in good spirits. He is currently using an oxygen mask for breathing support and has shown resilience despite his fragile health.

Ongoing Health Concerns

Pope Francis was first admitted to the hospital on February 14 due to breathing difficulties. His condition progressed into pneumonia affecting both lungs, sparking heightened concerns among the Vatican and the global Catholic community.

Medical experts note that at his advanced age, along with a history of chronic respiratory issues, his recovery may be prolonged. The pope had part of a lung removed in his youth and has faced a series of health challenges in recent years, including recurrent bronchitis and mobility issues that have made him dependent on a wheelchair.

Even during his hospital stay, Pope Francis has continued to fulfill his duties, working from his hospital suite and engaging in breathing exercises alongside prayer and rest. However, his prognosis remains “reserved,” meaning doctors are not making any definitive predictions about his recovery.

Speculations on Possible Resignation

Given his ongoing health struggles, speculation has arisen regarding whether Pope Francis might consider stepping down from his role, especially as he approaches his 89th birthday. Vatican expert Marco Politi suggested that if the pontiff recovers, he may wish to complete the Jubilee Year celebrations before deciding whether to resign.

Francis has previously acknowledged the precedent set by his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, who resigned in 2013 due to declining health. However, before his hospitalization, he repeatedly stated that he saw no immediate need to step down.

For now, the global Catholic community watches closely, hoping for the pontiff’s continued recovery.
