Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the need to strengthen Pakistan’s collaboration with the United Nations to tackle sustainable development and climate change challenges during a meeting with UN Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, Mohamed Yahya, on Friday.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to addressing climate change, the prime minister highlighted the significance of continued global cooperation and support from the UN. He praised the UN’s efforts in Pakistan, particularly their contributions during climate-related crises.
PM Shehbaz also conveyed his appreciation to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, recalling his leadership and the crucial assistance he provided during Pakistan’s devastating 2022 floods.
A major focus of the discussion was climate financing, which the prime minister identified as essential for mitigating climate change impacts. He urged developed nations to fulfill their financial commitments to help support global climate mitigation and adaptation initiatives.
Pakistan’s ongoing collaboration with the UN was reiterated, particularly in the implementation of various climate action projects. Additionally, PM Shehbaz underscored the importance of closing the financing gap to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He also called for increased representation of developing nations in international financial institutions and advocated for reforms in the global financial system to better address the needs of emerging economies.
The meeting was attended by senior government officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi, and the PM’s Coordinator for Climate Change, Romina Khursheed Alam.
