ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday urged the Afghan government to take firm action against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), stressing that the group’s cross-border terrorist activities are a red line for Pakistan. Chairing a federal cabinet meeting, Shehbaz called on the Afghan government to create a robust strategy to deny the TTP safe havens in Afghanistan and emphasized Pakistan’s readiness to engage in talks with Kabul on the matter.
“The TTP is operating from Afghanistan and carrying out terrorist attacks in Pakistan, killing innocent people. This cannot continue,” said Shehbaz. He reiterated Pakistan’s desire for good relations with Afghanistan but made it clear that the Afghan government must stop the TTP from using their territory for attacks on Pakistan. “This is a red line. TTP operating from there against Pakistan is unacceptable,” he added.
Shehbaz also expressed confidence in Pakistan’s armed forces and law enforcement agencies, who are ready to ensure peace and security. He mentioned successful counterterrorism operations in Waziristan that had eliminated several militants.
The prime minister paid tribute to Benazir Bhutto on the 17th anniversary of her death, lauding her courage, political insight, and sacrifice for democracy.
Regarding the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in February, Shehbaz assured that arrangements for the event were in place, promising high-quality cricket for the people of Pakistan.
Separately, Shehbaz chaired a meeting on human trafficking, directing authorities to take swift punitive action against traffickers. He questioned why government officials involved in facilitating human trafficking had not been disciplined and called for stricter visa and immigration controls.
The prime minister also reviewed the gas supply situation and addressed complaints about shortages, directing authorities to ensure uninterrupted supply during the winter season.
