Just days before the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif officially inaugurated the newly renovated Gaddafi Stadium, marking a milestone in the venue’s 65-year history.
During his speech, PM Shehbaz expressed his delight over the successful completion of the renovation, acknowledging the contributions of the entire team, including contractors and workers, under the leadership of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
He also extended appreciation to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for her valuable support in the renovation process, commending both her and the Punjab government for their role in the project.
In a lighthearted remark, the Prime Minister mentioned that while “Shehbaz Speed” was once the benchmark, he now refers to it as “Mohsin Speed.”
PM Shehbaz also praised the Pakistan cricket team for their outstanding performances in recent months, highlighting their ability to captivate the nation. He expressed hope that the team would secure victory in the upcoming Champions Trophy, particularly against India, which would make them heroes in the eyes of 240 million Pakistanis.
The opening ceremony promises to be a spectacular event, featuring a vibrant blend of music, dance, and fireworks. Fans will enjoy free entry, with stadium gates opening at 5:30 PM, except for the Imran Khan enclosure, which is reserved for special guests.
The evening’s entertainment lineup includes performances by renowned singers Ali Zafar, Arif Lohar, and Aima Baig, along with an electrifying drum performance and a dazzling fireworks show. A mesmerizing light display will further enhance the grandeur of the occasion.
Earlier in the day, Mohsin Naqvi visited the stadium to inspect the final preparations for the opening ceremony. He commended the team for completing the renovation in record time.
The revamped Gaddafi Stadium now features enhanced LED lighting, two large digital scoreboards, and upgraded seating across all enclosures to improve the viewing experience. An additional 10,000 seats have been installed, increasing the venue’s capacity.
Further upgrades include modern hospitality boxes and improved facilities for both players and spectators, ensuring a top-tier experience for everyone.
The completion of the stadium’s transformation in time for the Champions Trophy was a remarkable achievement. Under Naqvi’s leadership, the PCB successfully delivered the project in just 117 days.
“Our goal was to upgrade our cricket venues to international standards, and we are proud to provide fans with a world-class experience,” said Naqvi. “This renovation reflects the dedication and hard work of the entire team.”
Naqvi also expressed gratitude to the workers, contractors, and key contributors, including the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) and NESPAK, for their support. He reaffirmed the PCB’s commitment to establishing Pakistan as a premier destination for international cricket.
Gaddafi Stadium’s post-renovation journey begins with the opening match of the tri-nation ODI series on February 8, where New Zealand will take the field in an eagerly anticipated contest.
The stadium is also set to host four ICC Champions Trophy matches, including the second semi-final, further solidifying its status as a world-class cricket venue.
