PM Shehbaz Sharif Lauds FBR’s Recovery of Rs34.5 Billion

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for its swift recovery of Rs34.5 billion during a meeting on tax-related issues held on Saturday. The recovery, achieved within 24 hours of the decision, was described by the premier as a commendable and historic achievement.

PM Shehbaz emphasized that the success demonstrated the importance of hard work and dedication, stating, “This result shows that if there is hard work and commitment, success is attainable.” He termed the recovery a “good beginning” and stressed the need to establish a sustainable system to address long-standing issues.

“We have to resolve decades of problems by working together,” the prime minister said, urging the formation of a comprehensive legal framework to ensure permanent reforms in the FBR and the effective implementation of tax laws.

The premier also highlighted the importance of improving the FBR’s workforce and proposed a plan to enhance their capabilities. He suggested that the system could be strengthened through complete digitalization, third-party validation, and continuous monitoring.

PM Shehbaz called for strict action against FBR officers and personnel involved in any form of misconduct or misappropriation. At the same time, he emphasized the need to recognize and reward those who perform well, ensuring a culture of accountability and encouragement within the organization.

During the meeting, the prime minister was briefed on pending tax cases in courts and the steps being taken to recover funds through these cases. The FBR chairman provided updates on the reforms within the bureau’s directorate of law, the implementation of a digital algorithm for tax assessment, the performance of tax officers, and the overall reforms being undertaken by the FBR.

The meeting underscored the government’s commitment to improving tax collection mechanisms, ensuring transparency, and fostering a more efficient and accountable tax system in Pakistan.
