PM Seeks Formalization of $2B Azeri Investment Within a Month

BAKU:
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening trade and expanding collaboration in key sectors, including defense, transportation, and connectivity.

During a joint press briefing following the exchange of pre-signed agreements, both leaders underscored the significance of maximizing bilateral trade and investment for mutual benefit.

Prime Minister Shehbaz hailed Azerbaijan’s pledge to invest $2 billion in Pakistan, stating that this initiative would be advantageous for both nations. He emphasized the urgency of finalizing agreements within a month so they could be formally signed during President Aliyev’s scheduled visit to Pakistan in April.

“This marks a substantial leap in our economic and investment ties and is a true reflection of our deep-rooted fraternal relationship,” Shehbaz noted. “Despite our strong historical ties, our trade and investment figures have not reflected their true potential. Today, we have taken a decisive step, and in one month, we will witness its realization.”

Boosting Bilateral Trade

President Aliyev acknowledged that the current trade volume between the two nations remains relatively low, amounting to just tens of millions of dollars. However, he expressed confidence in a structured approach to significantly enhance trade relations.

“We have received concrete project proposals from Pakistan, and our representatives are assessing them. Our goal is to finalize discussions within a month so that by early April, all relevant documents will be ready for signing,” Aliyev stated.

The Azerbaijani leader highlighted that these investment projects span multiple sectors, including infrastructure, energy, mining, and economic development. He reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s continued support for Pakistan on global diplomatic fronts and emphasized deepening defense cooperation.

Strengthening Defense & Connectivity

Aliyev noted that Azerbaijan had previously acquired defense equipment from Pakistan and expressed satisfaction with its quality. He revealed plans for continued defense procurement and the possibility of joint manufacturing initiatives in the defense industry.

Regarding connectivity and transportation, Aliyev pointed out that people-to-people exchanges between the two countries were thriving, facilitated by regular flight operations. He anticipated an increase in these exchanges, leading to stronger cultural and economic ties.

He also praised Prime Minister Shehbaz’s economic policies and governance reforms, which, he said, had contributed to political stability and economic progress in Pakistan. “Your leadership has brought significant improvements, and as your brotherly nation, we celebrate your achievements,” Aliyev remarked.

Expressions of Gratitude & Diplomatic Support

Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed his deep appreciation for Azerbaijan’s unwavering support for the Kashmir cause. He acknowledged Azerbaijan’s commitment to advocating for Kashmir’s right to self-determination in line with UN resolutions.

He also highlighted the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling for an urgent and permanent ceasefire to ensure peace and stability in the region.

Upcoming Visit & Formalization of Agreements

President Aliyev confirmed his intent to visit Islamabad in April to formalize agreements for the $2 billion investment in Pakistan. Both leaders engaged in a one-on-one meeting, reinforcing their commitment to further strengthening strategic cooperation.

Their discussions also covered active collaboration in multilateral organizations, including the United Nations (UN), the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).

Following their talks, both leaders witnessed the formal exchange of agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing bilateral collaboration in various sectors.

Tribute to Azerbaijani Heroes

As part of his visit, Prime Minister Shehbaz paid tribute to Azerbaijan’s national heroes by visiting the “Victory Monument,” which commemorates those who sacrificed their lives during the 44-day Nagorno-Karabakh war.

Shehbaz laid a floral wreath at the memorial, recognizing Azerbaijan’s historic victory in restoring its territorial integrity.
