PIA Issues Apology Over Controversial Paris Flight Advertisement
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has publicly apologized following criticism of an advertisement featuring a plane seemingly heading toward the Eiffel Tower, which sparked widespread backlash online.
The image, shared on the airline’s official X account, was meant to celebrate the resumption of flights to Paris after the lifting of safety restrictions. However, the visual quickly drew criticism for its resemblance to scenes from the 9/11 attacks, where hijacked planes were flown into the World Trade Center in New York, resulting in nearly 3,000 deaths.
The ad showed a PIA aircraft appearing to approach the iconic French landmark, accompanied by the caption, “Paris, we’re coming today.”
Social media users reacted swiftly, with many pointing out the unsettling similarity to the tragic events of 2001. One commenter questioned, “Is this an ad or a threat?” while another remarked, “Paris must be on high alert now.”
In response to the controversy, PIA spokesperson Abdullah Khan clarified that the imagery was not intended to evoke such associations, emphasizing that it was a misunderstanding.
“This was an unfortunate misinterpretation of our intent, and we deeply regret any distress it caused,” Khan said, adding that the airline had no intention of causing offense.
The post attracted tens of thousands of comments, ranging from outrage to mockery. Some social media users criticized PIA’s marketing team, while others turned the incident into a joke, with one quipping, “This deserves a 9 out of 11 rating.”
Finance Minister Ishaq Dar also weighed in, describing the advertisement as “utterly foolish.” He confirmed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had ordered an investigation into the matter.
Despite the backlash, PIA noted that its return to European markets has been successful, with flights to Paris achieving over 95% occupancy. The controversial post remains visible on the airline’s official X account.
