Peter Mandelson set to become the UK’s next ambassador to the US

Peter Mandelson is poised to be appointed as the UK’s next ambassador to the United States, a significant move as it’s the first time in nearly five decades that a politician has been given the role. The announcement is expected from Labour leader Keir Starmer, who has chosen Mandelson, a former Labour minister and European Commissioner for Trade, to take on the position. Mandelson will begin his tenure as Donald Trump enters his second term as president.

This appointment comes amid potential changes in trade relations between the UK and the US, particularly with the incoming administration. Earlier, Prime Minister’s chief of staff, Morgan McSweeeny, visited Washington to engage with Trump’s team, signaling the government’s priority to maintain strong ties with the US.

The prime minister believes that Mandelson’s trade expertise and extensive political connections make him the ideal candidate to represent the UK’s interests, especially in light of the expected challenges in US-UK relations. Mandelson’s career highlights include serving as business secretary under Prime Minister Gordon Brown, president of the Board of Trade in 1998, and European Commissioner for Trade from 2004 to 2008.

A government source highlighted the importance of this political appointment, stating that Mandelson’s deep experience in trade and policy makes him a perfect representative for the UK’s economic and security interests in the US.

With the possibility of US tariffs looming, particularly as Trump has pledged tariffs of up to 20% on all imported goods, the UK is preparing for potential challenges to its trade. In response to this, Stephen Moore, a senior adviser to Trump, suggested that the UK may need to align more closely with the US economic model to secure a favorable trade deal. Moore argued that the UK must decide between the European model and the US model of economic freedom.

However, Keir Starmer has rejected this notion, emphasizing that the UK should not be forced to choose between the US and the EU. He reiterated his belief in maintaining strong relationships with both, asserting that the national interest lies in cooperation with both allies.

Mandelson, known for his pragmatism, has previously expressed that the UK must find a balanced approach, stating that the country should seek the “best of both worlds” by navigating relations with both the US and the EU.
