Pakistan’s UNSC non-permanent membership term hailed as major diplomatic success by Cabinet

ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet, led by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, on Wednesday hailed Pakistan’s two-year tenure as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), calling it a major diplomatic success.

Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar briefed the cabinet about the start of Pakistan’s term at the UNSC. The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s House, was attended by senior officials, according to the PM Office Media Wing.

Prime Minister Sharif directed that a detailed report on public sector imports through Gwadar Port over the past three months be presented at the next cabinet meeting.

The cabinet gave initial approval for legislation regarding amendments to Section 3(7) of the Pakistan Telecommunication (Reorganization) Act, following a proposal from the cabinet division/secretariat. Additionally, it recommended the approval of new regulations for appointing Press Officers from the Information Group to Pakistan’s diplomatic missions, ensuring a transparent and merit-based process.

The cabinet also approved the registration of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Thatta, on the Ministry of National Health’s recommendation.

Following a Supreme Court ruling on Human Rights Case No. 623-P/2017, the cabinet agreed to reconstitute a committee to establish prices for life-saving medical equipment, based on the Ministry of National Health’s recommendation.

The cabinet approved sending the National Food Safety, Animal and Plant Health Authority Bill to Parliament, as recommended by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research.

Other decisions included ratifying the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Cases’ meeting outcomes from December 17, 2024, and deferring the ratification of amendments to the Citizenship Act.

The cabinet also approved the decisions from the Economic Coordination Committee meeting on December 18 and the Cabinet Committee on State-Owned Enterprises meeting held on December 24.
