Pakistan starts two-year UNSC term, reaffirms support for Kashmir, Afghanistan peace

Pakistan’s Alternate Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, reaffirmed Pakistan’s stance on Kashmir in line with UN resolutions and stressed the significance of a stable Afghanistan for regional peace.

On Thursday, Pakistan began its eighth term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC) for 2025-26. As part of the ceremony, flags of the five new non-permanent members, including Pakistan, Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia, were raised at the UNSC headquarters in New York.

Ambassador Ahmad highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to the UN Charter’s principles, such as maintaining international peace, ensuring self-determination, and standing for peoples under foreign occupation. He emphasized the importance of multilateral cooperation, dialogue, and diplomacy to address global conflicts.

Pakistan’s goals on the UNSC will include pursuing just and peaceful solutions, preventing conflicts, and enhancing peacekeeping efforts. The country also has a seat on the ISIS and Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee.

Pakistan will take over the UNSC presidency in July, setting the agenda for the council. Additionally, Ahmad pointed out Pakistan’s improving security situation and commitment to economic progress and stability.

On Afghanistan, Ahmad reaffirmed Pakistan’s stance for a peaceful and stable Afghanistan, recognizing the close link between regional stability and Afghanistan’s peace. He also reiterated Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and remain steadfast in supporting peace initiatives.
