Pakistan Rejects US Official’s Allegations as ‘Unfounded and Irrational’

Pakistan has rejected recent allegations made by the US Deputy National Security Advisor regarding its nuclear missile capabilities, calling them “unfounded” and “irrational.” The Foreign Office issued a statement on Saturday, emphasizing that Pakistan’s strategic program and related capabilities are solely meant to deter any existential threats from its neighbors, not to pose a threat to any other country, including the United States.

The statement expressed surprise and disbelief at the US assumptions, particularly following remarks by Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer. Finer had warned that Pakistan’s development of long-range missiles could enable it to target countries beyond South Asia, including the US, and raised concerns about Pakistan’s intentions. His comments came just after the US imposed sanctions on Pakistan’s missile program and related entities, citing concerns over the potential proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

The Foreign Office responded by questioning the rationale behind the US official’s remarks, stating that Pakistan’s missile capabilities are meant purely for defensive purposes and that Pakistan’s strategic position has always been aimed at maintaining peace and stability in South Asia. The statement also highlighted the historical and strong relationship between Pakistan and the US, noting that these allegations would negatively affect future relations.

Pakistan reiterated that it has never intended harm toward the US and that it has made significant sacrifices in the bilateral relationship, often suffering due to the consequences of US policies in the region. Furthermore, the Foreign Office criticized the US for focusing on Pakistan’s missile capabilities while overlooking similar threats in the region from other countries.

The statement concluded by reaffirming Pakistan’s right to develop its defense capabilities and its commitment to maintaining credible minimum deterrence. Pakistan also expressed its continued desire for constructive engagement with the US, aiming to foster a balanced approach to security and stability in the region.
