Pakistan calls for talks to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula

UNITED NATIONS:
Pakistan has expressed concern over North Korea’s recent ballistic missile launch, urging diplomatic dialogue to address the ongoing challenges on the Korean Peninsula.

Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations, spoke at a Security Council meeting held two days after North Korea tested what it described as a new type of intermediate-range hypersonic missile equipped with a glide vehicle. Akram emphasized that such actions are harmful to both regional and global peace and security.

Pakistan reiterated its commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, aligning with UN Security Council resolutions and global non-proliferation goals. The Pakistani envoy called for an end to provocations such as missile tests and coercive threats, stressing the importance of diplomacy.

“Pakistan opposes further nuclear weapons testing, whether in Korea or elsewhere,” Akram said, urging all parties involved to show restraint and avoid escalating tensions. He recommended that the Security Council consider implementing Confidence Building Measures to de-escalate the situation and restore dialogue.

Pakistan remains committed to supporting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula within the framework set by the United Nations.

Regarding Syria, Pakistan highlighted the need for an inclusive and representative governance process in the country, following recent political changes. Ambassador Akram emphasized that this process must be Syrian-led and supported by the UN to ensure a peaceful transition and Syria’s unity and territorial integrity.
