Pakistan and China Sign Deal to Send First Pakistani Astronauts to Space

 

Pakistan and China Sign Historic Agreement for First Pakistani Astronauts’ Space Mission

In a groundbreaking development, the Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) and the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) have formalized a cooperation agreement, paving the way for Pakistani astronauts to embark on a mission to the Tiangong Space Station.

As part of this agreement, two Pakistani astronauts will receive specialized training at China’s Astronaut Center, according to an official statement released on Friday.

One of the selected astronauts will be trained as a scientific payload specialist, equipping them to conduct advanced research aboard the Chinese Space Station (CSS).

The astronaut selection process is expected to be completed by 2026, aligning with future mission plans of the CSS.

During their mission, Pakistan’s astronaut will participate in cutting-edge scientific research across multiple disciplines, including biomedical sciences, aerospace technology, applied physics, fluid mechanics, space radiation, material sciences, ecology, microgravity studies, and astronomy.

The CSS is equipped with advanced experimental modules and external adaptors that enable extensive research in various fields. Findings from these experiments are anticipated to contribute significantly to medical advancements, environmental monitoring, and space technology, with potential applications benefiting life on Earth.

Leaders Hail the Milestone Achievement

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the agreement as a transformative moment in Pakistan’s space journey. He emphasized that this milestone would be remembered as a key step toward achieving the nation’s aspirations in human spaceflight.

He also highlighted Pakistan’s steady progress in space exploration, citing past achievements in satellite launches, the development of indigenous expertise, and contributions to global scientific advancements.

Dr. Lin Xiqiang, Director General of the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA), expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, reaffirming China’s commitment to fostering international partnerships in space exploration. He noted that Pakistan’s participation in the CSS program symbolizes the strong bilateral relations between the two nations and will facilitate knowledge-sharing while promoting peaceful space exploration for the benefit of humanity.

SUPARCO Chairman Mohammad Yousuf Khan lauded the agreement as a milestone in Pakistan’s space endeavors, underscoring the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and technological advancements.

He also encouraged young scientists, professionals, and academics to actively contribute to Pakistan’s astronaut program through research, innovation, and skill development.

This mission is set to elevate Pakistan’s position in the global space community, driving forward scientific research and technological innovation. The research conducted aboard the CSS will yield valuable insights into space sciences, contribute to the development of groundbreaking solutions, and enhance Pakistan’s role in international space exploration efforts.
