New Syrian Government Set to Take Office on March 1, Announces Foreign Minister

Syria is set to establish a new government on March 1, as announced by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani on Wednesday. The interim administration, which has been governing since the ousting of Bashar al-Assad, will be replaced by a government that aims to reflect the diversity of the Syrian population. Shaibani shared these details during the World Governments Summit in the United Arab Emirates.

Following the rebel takeover, an interim government led by Mohammad al-Bashir was formed to manage the nation’s affairs until the new government takes office. Last month, Ahmed al-Sharaa, head of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, which played a key role in the rebellion against Assad, was named interim president. His responsibilities include creating a transitional legislative body, as the previous Assad-era parliament and the long-ruling Baath Party have been disbanded.

HTS and other rebel factions have also been dissolved, with plans to integrate their fighters into a unified national military force. In a recent interview, Sharaa mentioned that organizing elections could take up to five years. The new leadership has committed to hosting a national dialogue conference to include all segments of Syrian society, though a specific date has not yet been announced.
