Israel Declares National Emergency as Wildfires Rage Near Jerusalem

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced a national emergency in response to massive wildfires sweeping across central Israel, marking the country’s most severe fire crisis in over ten years. The fires, driven by scorching heat and strong winds, have led to mass evacuations and disrupted daily life near Jerusalem.

Dense smoke covered major roads west of the capital as fires rapidly spread through dry vegetation. Firefighters, with the assistance of police and military units, have been deployed to control the flames. Emergency services confirmed dozens of people have been injured.

Speaking in a video address, Netanyahu emphasized the gravity of the situation. “This is not a local incident—this is a national emergency. Our primary focus is the protection of Jerusalem,” he stated.

The main highway linking Jerusalem and Tel Aviv was closed as several towns were evacuated to prevent further harm. Flames reached dangerously close to residential areas and key infrastructure.

According to Magen David Adom (MDA), 23 individuals received medical attention, with 13 hospitalized due to smoke inhalation and burn injuries. The injured included two expectant mothers and two young children.

Fire Chief Eyal Caspi revealed that intense weather conditions forced aerial firefighting efforts to pause. “Our priority is to preserve human life. Aircraft operations are currently suspended due to high winds,” he said.

Law enforcement officials arrested a man from East Jerusalem suspected of attempting to ignite a fire. However, authorities have yet to confirm any connection between this act and the widespread blazes.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir visited the fire-stricken zone, suggesting arson may have contributed to the crisis. He also mentioned that international aid was being arranged.

In response to the escalating disaster, Israel has sought help from neighboring nations including Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Bulgaria, and Croatia. Aircraft from Italy and Croatia are expected to assist firefighting efforts soon, Netanyahu’s office confirmed.

Eyewitnesses reported flames along the highway near Latrun, with several drivers abandoning their vehicles to escape on foot. At least five communities have been evacuated so far, and authorities have urged the public to avoid non-essential travel in affected areas.

Meanwhile, residents near Modiin voiced concerns over what they saw as insufficient preparation, despite forecasts predicting extreme fire conditions.
