Nawaz Strikes Back as Imran Warns of Fresh Protests

Nawaz Sharif Criticizes PTI as Imran Khan Plans New Wave of Protests

LAHORE: Following the failure of government-opposition talks to yield any results, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced a nationwide protest campaign after Eid. In response, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif firmly stated that the government would not permit political groups “unfamiliar with democratic values” to organize long marches or violent demonstrations.

Although he did not mention PTI directly, Nawaz’s remarks were an apparent reference to the party, which previously held a prolonged sit-in at D-Chowk during his government (2013-2018) and staged a protest at the same location on November 26, which reportedly ended in violence.

Speaking at his Jati Umra residence in Lahore, where he met party senator and speechwriter Irfan Siddiqui, Nawaz emphasized that those who disregard democratic principles would not be allowed to create instability through protests or artificial political crises. He warned PTI against attempts to “derail” the progress made under the PML-N’s governance.

“The people of Pakistan will not accept any disruptions in the country’s journey toward development, progress, and public welfare,” he asserted, stressing the importance of maintaining stability.

Reflecting on the country’s economic challenges, the former prime minister lamented that had Pakistan continued on its development trajectory from 2013, it would not have needed to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or other external sources.

Nawaz also urged his party members to actively engage with the public and expose what he called the “malicious intentions” of elements, both within and outside the parliament, who seek to create political unrest. “These individuals are incapable of meaningful dialogue or resolving issues through political negotiations,” he remarked.

PML-N’s Push Against PTI’s Protests

The PML-N leadership, along with its allies, believes that Pakistan is now on the road to economic recovery and that any efforts by PTI to destabilize the country must be countered. Nawaz, who had maintained a low profile for some time, has recently re-emerged in political discussions, meeting party lawmakers from Punjab. His focus has largely been on countering Imran Khan’s political influence.

Similarly, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has also sharpened her criticism of PTI. While she typically focuses on development projects, she has recently taken aim at the PTI founder, accusing him of engaging in “destructive politics.”

Maryam Nawaz Slams PTI’s Approach

At a recent public gathering, CM Maryam indirectly referred to Imran Khan, questioning, “Who introduced chaos and discord into Pakistan’s politics? Who fostered a culture of extremism and indecency?” The crowd responded with Imran Khan’s name.

She further remarked, “Who was responsible for attacking the country? Political differences may exist, but discussions should remain respectful. I won’t take names, but we all know who is guilty of these actions.”

Comparing her administration’s efforts to PTI’s tactics, Maryam said, “We are providing students with laptops, while they distributed petrol bombs and weapons.” She vowed never to forgive those who, in her view, harmed Pakistan.

Defending her governance, the Punjab chief minister stated, “I do not engage in personal business while holding office. Every moment in power is dedicated to serving the people.”

This renewed political confrontation signals an intensifying battle between the PML-N and PTI, with both parties preparing for a heated post-Eid political landscape.
