National Stadium Reopens with Upgraded Facilities and Festivities

The newly renovated National Bank Stadium in Karachi was officially inaugurated on Tuesday after undergoing extensive upgrades in preparation for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled to take place from February 19 to March 9.

The grand ceremony was attended by key dignitaries, including Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, and MQM-P Convener Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui.

Pakistan’s national squad, currently participating in the tri-nation ODI series, was also present at the event, which celebrated the stadium’s transformation—completed in a record time of just 120 days.

The PCB marked the occasion with an elaborate opening ceremony featuring live performances, an impressive fireworks display, and a mesmerizing light show, all of which were open to the public free of charge.

Popular artists Ali Zafar, Shafqat Amanat Ali, and Sahir Ali Bagga entertained the audience, followed by a captivating drum performance and fireworks, with a vibrant light display adding to the night’s spectacle.

Earlier, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi emphasized that the upgrades at National Bank Stadium had surpassed the standards of Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. In recognition of the laborers’ hard work in completing the renovation, he announced complimentary tickets for them to attend the upcoming tri-nation series match between Pakistan and South Africa.

During a special ceremony in Karachi to honor the workers involved in the renovation, Naqvi acknowledged the skepticism surrounding the stadium’s transformation but credited the relentless efforts of the workforce for proving doubters wrong. He also praised the provincial and local authorities for their cooperation, particularly in improving parking facilities.

“National Bank Stadium is now a state-of-the-art venue that will host both domestic and international matches while offering an unparalleled experience for players and spectators alike,” Naqvi remarked.

Expressing confidence in the national cricket team, the PCB chairman urged fans not to be disheartened by occasional losses. He assured supporters that the PCB fully backs team captain Rizwan and the selection committee. “Have faith in the team, stand by them, and they will continue to perform at their best,” he added.

Major Upgrades and Enhancements

According to the PCB’s official website, the newly constructed pavilion represents a major milestone in the stadium’s development, reaffirming the board’s commitment to enhancing cricket infrastructure in Pakistan.

The pavilion boasts world-class dressing rooms for players and match officials, along with hospitality suites for distinguished guests. The project was completed in an unprecedented four-month timeframe, showcasing the efficiency and dedication behind the stadium’s modernization.

In addition to the pavilion, several key enhancements were made to improve the overall experience at National Bank Stadium. These include:

  • Installation of 350 LED floodlights to enhance broadcast quality
  • Repair and upgrade of two digital replay screens
  • Addition of more than 5,000 new seats to improve spectator comfort

Naqvi closely monitored the renovation process, making multiple visits to the site to ensure its timely completion. Nearly 5,000 workers contributed their efforts to revamp the stadium, ensuring it meets international standards for upcoming tournaments.

The venue is set to host two matches in the ongoing tri-nation ODI series featuring Pakistan, New Zealand, and South Africa on February 12 and 14. Furthermore, it will be the stage for three crucial fixtures in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, including the opening match between Pakistan and New Zealand on February 19.
